The Story Our Utensils Tell — A Feeding Journey Through the Years

The other day I bought a new set of “big kid” utensils for L— and somehow that tiny purchase led me down a sentimental rabbit hole. While organizing our kitchen drawers, I found every little spoon, fork, and feeding gadget we’ve used since our girls were babies. And just like that, I was holding years of feeding milestones in my hands.

With L, we started with those super soft silicone spoons — the kind that bend just right for delicate mouths. She loved purees, especially sweet potato and butternut squash, so feeding time was a (mostly) smooth and joyful experience. I still remember the messy faces and the way she’d lean forward for the next bite.

C? Completely different story. She wasn’t into purees at all — the texture just didn’t work for her. We eventually saw a feeding specialist who helped us shift our approach. Camila wanted to feel her food. So we embraced baby-led weaning and stocked up on flat suction plates, textured silicone mats, and easy-grip food scissors. It was messy. It was trial and error. And it was beautiful in its own way.

Looking at all these tools now — some worn out, some barely used — I’m reminded how different each child is. And how feeding is not just about nutrition, but about listening, adjusting, and letting our little ones lead the way.

Now, I’m sorting through everything and keeping only what truly worked for us. The rest? I’m cleaning it up to pass along. Because maybe that one banana-shaped teether spoon that didn’t work for us will be perfect for another little one out there.

Here’s to flexible parenting, learning from our kids, and the quiet stories hidden in kitchen drawers.
