How to Plan a Baby Shower: Tips, Ideas & What Actually Matters

Planning a baby shower can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re doing it without your mom or a traditional planner. But let me tell you—you don’t have to do it all alone. With a little support, organization, and love, it can become one of the most joyful moments of your pregnancy journey.

My Baby Shower Experience

When I was pregnant with my first baby, my mom couldn’t be with me—she was in Peru and couldn’t travel. That was really hard. But luckily, my mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and my sister stepped in. Together, we made it happen.

My husband and I paid for the venue and the food, which were the biggest expenses. Then we divided and conquered everything else. Some people helped with the decorations, others brought flowers, balloons, and set up games. We had friends flying in from Peru who not only came to celebrate but helped with setting up the venue before we arrived.

That morning, I went to the salon to get my hair and makeup done—I wanted to feel my best. After all, it was our first child, and we were bursting with excitement. We played baby shower games, took lots of photos, and had a delicious meal. The energy in the room was warm and joyful—it truly felt like a celebration of life and community.

Tips for Planning Your Baby Shower

Here are the most important takeaways I’d share with any expecting mama:

1.  Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Not everyone has someone who offers to plan (or pay for) their baby shower, and that’s okay. But don’t try to do it all yourself. Ask your close family and friends to help with tasks like:

  • Picking up balloons or flowers
  • Organizing baby shower games
  • Coordinating RSVPs or music
  • Helping set up or clean up

2.  Set a Budget and Prioritize

The most expensive part for us was food. We decided to invest in good food and keep decorations simple but meaningful. Set your budget early and focus on what you care about most—whether that’s food, location, or photos.

3.  Make the Gift-Giving Meaningful

Instead of asking for cards, we asked guests to bring a children’s book and write a message inside. It was one of the best decisions we made. Today, when we read those books to our kids, we remember who gave them. It’s a lasting and personal memory that goes beyond a card that might be thrown away.

4. Create a Baby Registry (Even If It’s Small)

As first-time parents, we made registries at Amazon, Target, and Pottery Barn. Each store gave us free welcome kits with mini product samples, and later, we received discounts on remaining items.

Pro tip:

  • After the shower, wait until you see what you received before using your discount to buy the rest. Most stores let you use that discount for up to six months after your event.

5. Don’t Forget Thank You Cards

Yes, you’re pregnant and busy (and soon you’ll have a newborn!). But sending a thank you card—or even a quick message or photo of your baby—is a thoughtful gesture. If you can, write hand-written notes. If not, a digital thank-you with a sweet photo goes a long way.

Final Thoughts: It’s About the Love, Not the Perfection

Our baby shower wasn’t Pinterest-perfect, but it was perfect for us. Full of laughs, love, support, and a little chaos. That’s all that matters.

So mama, don’t stress about matching colors or going viral on Instagram. Focus on what brings you joy. Ask for help. Take photos. Eat the cake. And remember—this is just the beginning of your journey into motherhood.
